INTAKE INFORMATION

January 2023

Welcome!

Welcome to Grimsby Roller Derby!

Grimsby Roller Derby comprises of two teams; the Grim Reavers (est in 2012) and the Brothers Grim (est in 2014). We also play together in ‘Open to All (OTA)’ games as Grimsby Roller Derby.

In 2019, the Grim Reavers competed and won Tier 3 East British Roller Derby Championships. They were promoted into Tier 2 in 2019 however, due to the pandemic the season did not go ahead as planned.

We hope you enjoyed your first taster sessions and we would love to know your feedback! Please take this short survey to let us know your thoughts – here.

GRD only returned back to training in September 21 after covid and the league took a slow re-introduction back into the sport. Since the pandemic a lot of things have changed for us and we are still not currently operating “as pre pandemic levels” as we are still planning and making necessary changes. At the moment the Reavers are almost a full competitive team and the Brothers team needs completely rebuilding.

What is Roller Derby?

Minimum skills

We will teach you everything you will need to know from kitting up to full contact and game-play scenarios. Your GRD training is called your minimum skills. Within your minimum skills there are currently two levels:

  • Foundation level- intro to skating/falling/stopping
  • Gameplay level – advance skating/falling/stopping and intro to contact

We advise that you spend at least an hour a week taking part in off skates exercise.

If you do not want to play contact, please let us know and we can train you up to be a skating official (referee).

If you do not want to skate, please let us know and we can teach you all you need to know within our non-skating official roles.

Training

We are currently only running one session a week every Sunday at Grimsby Leisure Centre 10:30 – 12:30.

Prior to the pandemic the league trained for 3 hours on a Sunday morning and for 2 hours in Cleethorpes on a Tuesday evening (for advanced only). We are aiming to get back to this however, as it stands this is not feasible for the club.

We ask you arrive approx. 10 minutes early to a session to kit up so you are ready on track for the start of the training session.

You should bring plenty of water for each training session, along with comfortable clothes and suitable shoes. If you are wearing shorts, we also recommend you should wear tights/leggings underneath to avoid abrasions to your legs.

A roll call is done on the facebook group the Thursday before training, please comment on this post if you can attend the training session.

Subs

Intake sessions are free to new members. All new starters have access to one free skate session. This can either be an intake session or a training session if it is your first time attending.
Starting the month after joining, a new member is required to pay £20 monthly subs from the next month following their first session.

Training sessions are £5 each until the next month when subs payments are required.

you will join monthly subs at £20 via BACS/SO from November onwards.

President Comments

Welcome adventurers.

We at GRD are thrilled you have said yes to giving roller derby a try. For many they have yet to find a passion and for us this is ours. We train together, we play together and we have fun together and we look forward to sharing that with you. Before I joined GRD I didn’t enjoy sport and here I am now passionate about this sport; President of Grimsby Roller Derby and a proud member of The Grim Reavers.

We hope you’ll join our family.
